Guadeloupe is made up of two main islands which are joined together by a mangrove swamp, the eastern wing is known as Grande-Terre and the western wing Basse-Terre. There are smaller islands although these as not always considered as part of the mainland of Guadeloupe.
The capital city of Guadeloupe is Basse-Terre althought this not the largest city in the country. One place of interest is the Cathedral of Saint Pierre et Saint Paul. This is a notable building made from grey stone and highlighted by white statues.
Grande-Terre is smaller the Basse-Terre and its coastline consists of both white and black sandy beaches and cliffs surrounded by coral reefs. This is the more tourist friendly of the islands and most resorts can be found here.
