Lanzarote is of volcanic origin and the fourth largest of the Canary Islands. The last largest eruption was in 1730 and wiped out much of the western side of the island, destroying towns and villages and leaving the sky a deep black for six whole years.
The islands is full of many small resorts which cater to all holiday makers and blend into the environment well as there are strict laws enforced to minimise environmental impact on the island itself. To date almost no high-rise constructions block the skyline and a policy of traditional style buildings has been maintained.
