The island has been a holiday retreat since the 1950s but soon became a mass tourist destination in the 1980s where it became infamous for it's cheap fun in the sun holidays with a "lager lout" status. In the late 1990's the government decided to act upon this and soon began to remove the old package holiday destinations in an effort to rebrand the island.
Despite this the island has come along leaps and bounds. It's inland areas relatively unspoiled and it's capital Palma now one of Spains most fashionable cities. The package resorts still remain but their excesses dramaticallty reduced and the island is once again famous for it's beautiful scenery and beaches.
