The EHIC (European Health Insurance Card) and GHIC (Global Health Insurance Card) offer free or discounted healthcare in EU countries, on the same basis as a resident in that country. While these cards cover necessary state-provided care, they don’t guarantee everything will be free, and you may still need to contribute to medical costs. If you have an EHIC or GHIC, some insurers will even waive the excess on your travel insurance.
You will, however, still need travel insurance. The EHIC/GHIC doesn’t cover things like repatriation, mountain rescue, or lost property, and isn’t valid on cruises. Travel insurance is still essential for complete protection.
The GHIC has replaced the EHIC after the UK left the EU, and it is currently valid in EU countries, EEA nations, and Switzerland, with the potential to be valid in more countries in the future.
The following countries enable you to use your card abroad:

Remember, the EHIC/GHIC isn’t a substitute for travel insurance and won’t cover repatriation or expenses for a relative to stay or travel to you in case of emergency.
You can apply for a free GHIC on the NHS website or by calling 0300 330 1350. Each person needs their own card, and they are valid for 5 years, so check its expiry before travelling.
