If you drive a taxi or any vehicle for transporting people commercially, you're required by law to have both a taxi licence, and taxi-specific vehicle insurance. This rule applies regardless of whether you provide private or public hire, be that full-time or part-time.
Taxi insurance is essential for protecting you, your vehicle, and your passengers. It’s not just for standard black cabs - jobs like chauffeurs, school transfers, and airport pickups also need cover.
As with pretty much all insurance, policies vary, and with taxi insurance you can choose from third party only, third party fire and theft, or fully comprehensive cover, depending on your needs.
Why can’t I just get normal car insurance?
Normal car insurance won’t cover you properly to operate as a taxi. Taxi insurance is specifically designed to protect you, your livelihood, your vehicle, and your passengers, against potential loss and damage. For complete cover, you need to make sure you’ve got insurance which covers all aspects of your commercial service.
The differences in cover come from using your vehicle for ‘hire and reward’. Using a domestic car to do this can actually invalidate your cover if an accident occurs. ‘Hire and reward’ is a type of commercial use, meaning taxi insurance will most likely be more expensive than standard car insurance too.
Since you're transporting passengers commercially, it's absolutely worth considering public liability cover. This’ll protect your passengers against injuries or damage to their belongings while in your taxi. Some insurance policies include this, but in many cases, you'll need to add it as an optional extra.
