Abyssinian cat

The Abyssinian cat has an interesting history, believed to have originated from a kitten named Zula, brought from Alexandria, Egypt, to England by a British soldier. While many Abyssinians in Europe, America, and Australia are said to descend from Zula, some cats from Libya may have contributed to the breed’s gene pool in the U.S.

Abyssinians are known for their unique ticked coat, giving them a tawny appearance, often with tabby markings on their paws and tails. They have large almond-shaped green or gold eyes, outlined with dark lines, and large ears. The typical coat colour is a warm golden hue, but Abyssinians also come in blue, fawn, cinnamon, and red. There’s even a Silver Abyssinian variant with white, cream, and grey tones.

These cats are active, intelligent, and playful, but they tend to be more independent than most other domestic breeds. Abyssinians aren’t usually lap cats since they’re often too busy exploring and interacting with their surroundings. They love heights and will climb to the highest points, whether it’s furniture or their owner's shoulders. If left without enough stimulation, they can get bored and even depressed. A long-haired version of the Abyssinian is called the Somali.

Despite the name, the Abyssinian doesn’t actually originate from Abyssinia (modern-day Ethiopia). The name comes from early cats labelled as Abyssinians in England, reportedly imported from that region. However, research suggests that their true origin may lie along the coast of the Indian Ocean and Southeast Asia.

One of the earliest Abyssinians, a taxidermy specimen from the 1830s, is still displayed in the Leiden Zoological Museum in the Netherlands. This cat was purchased from a supplier in India, suggesting that British colonists and merchants travelling through Indian Ocean ports may have introduced the breed to Europe. Refined in England, the Abyssinian has become a beloved breed known for its striking appearance and energetic nature.
