Cheap Cornish Rex Cat Pet Insurance

The Cornish Rex is perfect for those who enjoy the company of energetic, curious cats that love to be the center of attention. These sleek, gazelle-like felines are playful, always in a sociable mood, and love to make everything a game. With their velvety, suede-like coats, they also make great lap warmers in winter. Intelligent and alert, they’re easy to handle but can be quite mischievous, especially around dinnertime when they’ll try to steal your food if you’re not watching closely.

Cornish Rexes are known for their affectionate nature and their fun-loving personalities. Many enjoy playing fetch and will repeatedly bring objects back for you to toss. They are also skilled climbers and jumpers, using their agile paws to explore every corner of the house. No shelf or cupboard is safe from their curious and persistent nature.

The breed’s origins date back to July 21, 1950, in Bodmin Moor, Cornwall, England, when a tortoiseshell and white domestic cat named Serena gave birth to a unique curly-coated kitten, later named Kallibunker. Unlike his straight-haired littermates, Kallibunker had short, curly fur, a long and slender body, large ears, and a wedge-shaped head. His fur’s similarity to that of a Rex rabbit led to the breed being named Cornish Rex.

Intrigued by Kallibunker’s unusual traits, his owner, Nina Ennismore, worked with a geneticist to breed him back to his mother, producing more curly-coated kittens. This established the foundation for the Cornish Rex breed. In 1957, two Cornish Rexes were brought to America, and one of them, LaMorna Cove, gave birth to a litter that became the basis of the breed in the U.S.

To expand the gene pool, breeders initially outcrossed Cornish Rexes with Siamese, Havana Browns, American Shorthairs, and domestic shorthairs, creating a wide variety of colours and patterns. Today, outcrossing is no longer necessary, as the breed has enough genetic diversity to remain healthy. The Cornish Rex was accepted for championship status by the Cat Fanciers' Association (CFA) in 1964 and is now recognized by all major North American cat registries.
